Sketchbook: Jimson Weed

This amazing-looking plant, also known as the Thorn Apple, just appeared in our garden, I had to cut it down before the seeds dispersed because it is toxic. I thought that I would photograph and try to draw the spiky seed casings before getting rid of it.

The thorns are magnificent and quite hard to draw as they vary in size and point in all directions. My drawings were not very accurate, but I have the photographic references as well.

  1. One thing that I may try with the remains of the poor plant is to let the weather remove the soft tissue, leaving the skeleton of the seed case – this happened on a previous year, naturally, and the resulting structure was so delicate and complex.
